Like all top Chianti makers, Simona Barbanera also crafts a small amount of ‘Super Tuscan’ red. This means marrying cherry-rich Sangiovese (the great grape of Chianti) with Bordeaux stars Cabernet and Merlot. And when it’s made by the Barbanera family, in the excellent 2009 vintage, it means great things.
This gem is fresh off a gold medal victory in Berlin and is guaranteed to be a winner with your guests. Wondering what to serve it with? Take a cue from Simona and her family: they like to enjoy Saracosa with the local salami and with wild boar ragù. For something a little more familiar, a rich spaghetti Bolognese will be delicious.
Mid ruby-red. Ripe cherry and exotic spice aromas. On the palate, dense, rounded berry fruit with fine tannins and a long, smooth finish. - Zagat Wine
