Fife Mendocino Uplands Zinfandel, Mendocino 2004
What To Expect From This Wine With zinfandel, our goal is to produce a wine with strong and dense fruit, liveliness, personality and beauty—and one that expresses a sense of place. Achieving this goal, we believe, requires focusing on growing the best grapes and then handling them gently. We hope, above all, to avoid over ripeness, excessive wood, excessive alcohol, and any other factor that would mask the nuances of flavors so unique to this personality-rich variety. The Best of the Hillsides Uplands refers to the many hillside and benchland sites around Lake Mendocino which are home to cherished small blocks of old red vines, many tended by the third generation of their original founders. Vine age and continuity of production are testament to the quality of these fortunate growing sites. To a great extent, these vines are self-limiting in yield and ripen smaller crop loads to mouth-watering intensity. It is exciting to utilize these older sites in a blend that expresses the best of Mendocino fruit. About the Harvest In 2004, another winter passed without real severe conditions. The scant rainfall was somewhat worrisome but all of the viticultural milestones arrive on a regular schedule: Bud break around April 1 led to bloom in mid-May and veraison around late July. When the daytime reached the high 90’s, the night brought 60’s and fog chilled the morning. Net-net, as they say, the heat summation evened out. Early sugar accumulation was nevertheless accompanied by good acid retention and HUGE color and flavor development. The Gentle Art of Winemaking Our winemaking philosophy is simple—obtain grapes with personality, handle them minimally, then focus on blending to bring out nuance and character in the wine. We depend upon the vineyard to create the fruit, the density and the concentration. In the winemaking we seek to assure balance, elegance, texture and length of flavor. Tasting Notes The ripe flavors of raspberry jam come forward and define this Zin. Petite syrah and Carignane add structure and tannin along with wild berry zest and spice. With its soft entry, luscious fruit and spice flavors, and easygoing appeal, our Mendocino Zinfandel blend is a versatile companion to a wide variety of cuisines. Download Printable Version
