The 2004 entices right away with refined but rich layers of cinnamon, sun-drenched blackberries, cocoa powder and toasted vanilla. The palate is silky and textured with notes of fresh cranberry compote, baking spices and a hint of licorice. There is a core of what can only be described as that famed Rutherford dust running throughout this wine, which adds structure and depth to the rich fruit flavors. This wine can be enjoyed now but will cellar beautifully for the better part of the next six to eight years.

Sequoia Grove Rutherford Bench Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2004
Region: Rutherford, California
Winery: Sequoia Grove
Variety: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc
Rating: 4
Color: Deep garnet, with still dark edges
Nose: Closed, but with some fine and complex fruit of mainly red and black, but some blue poking in there, too. Good dustiness to the finish of the nose, with some anise and cherry.
Palate: Quite good, with very silky feel, but still a round and strong grip of tannins. All of that fruit is there in the palate which is also still tight, but the full-body and sensual mouthfeel is wonderfully apparent. Long finish.
