Color: bright red with hints of purple - lots of pigment
Nose: very aromatic, with brambly, wild red fruits - raspberries
Body: Medium-light - not particularly heavy or strongly structured, but flavorfuol
Palate: continues through nicely from the nose with the same wild fruit notes and brambly, spicy qualities. Exuberant and a bit rustic - very fun.
Wine pairing: very good for game meats or pork, beef can work but a soft cut like a tenderloin would be better than a more marbled or tougher cut that might overpower the wine. I suggest this beef wellington:

According to the bottle, this blend is 50% grenache, 20% syrah, 15% carignan, and 15% cinsault, and is 13.5% alcohol by volume. The wine is much lighter in color, showing light ruby and garnet tones, than what may come to mind when thinking of a Rhone wine. In the glass, I smelled aromas of leather, berries, and black cherries, in that order. The body is medium-light, with moderate tannins. At first, there’s an off-putting imbalance in alcohol level that overpowers the fruit, to the point that I wasn’t able to taste any fruit at all. But give it a few minutes and the alcohol becomes much more balanced. I think this wine should be decanted for about 15 minutes or so. After aeration, the subtlety of the fruit flavors mixes well with the tannin and leather, creating a pleasant velvety feeling in the mouth.

In the end, La Vieille Ferme’s Cotes du Ventoux is a very drinkable wine. It’s nothing spectacular, but it’s certainly much better than other wines that can be found at this price point.
