Flowers Sonoma County Perennial 2004
Region: Sonoma County, California
Winery: Flowers Vineyard & Winery
Variety: Pinot Noir, Syrah, Pinot Meunier, Chardonnay
Color: Medium-ruby with purple edges
Nose: I initially thought that this was a pretty good Cab after a quick sniff, and was embarrassed to first find out that it was Pinot. I realized that I was fooled by the supple smoke and oak, but even with the bright red fruit and cranberry that came out a bit later, I still thought I detected some black fruit indicative of either Cab or Syrah or something of that sort. So I was happy to find out today that it's a blend (with some lingering embarrassment)!
Palate: Quite good, it's a very interesting complex mix of fruit that is still overshadowed by the good oak. The bright red cherry and cranberry from the majority of Pinot is backed up by some game and black fruit from that Syrah that has been added. Long finish ends with more red cherry, spice and oak. Give this a year or two to integrate further.
