Escudo Rojo 2006
Region: Maipo, Chile
Winery: Baron Philippe de Rothschild
Variety: Cabernet, Carmenere, Syrah
Escudo Roso represents an ambitious venture of Baron de Phillippe Rothischild wines in the Maipo and Rapel Valleys in Chile. A blend of the two Cabernets with Carmenere and Syrah, it offers a cascade of ripe red fruit, cherry, blackcurrant and raspberry, delicately accompanied by subtler notes of tobacco, spice and toast. The palate is round, rich and full-bodied. The tannins are mature and round, gently enfolded in delicious vanilla, chocolate and liquorice flavours. The finish is long, flavoursome and silky, underlining the fullness of the ripe fruit.
Winemaker Notes - The wine, an attractive, deep ruby red, opens on rich spice, toast and black cherry aromas to which a touch of eucalyptus brings subtlety and aromatic refinement. Round and smooth on the palate, powerful though not excessively so, it displays excellent balance, combining fine, well-integrated tannins with notes of vanilla, caramel, liquorices and mocha. The flavorsome finish, generous and complex, is the expression of a successful varietal mix to which an unusual and pleasant dash of Syrah brings a touch of pepper and spice, highlighting the wine's exotic character and warmth. Like most red wines, Escudo Rojo will benefit from decanting, which allows the wine to reveal the full extent of its aromas and flavors.Escudo Rojo can easily be kept for 3 to 5 years in suitable conditions of storage. Those who appreciate older wines can of course keep Escudo Rojo for longer so as to discover all the qualities of this fine Chilean red wine.
