Argiolas Turriga 2001
Region: Sardinia
Winery: Argiolas
Variety: Cannonau, Carignano, Bovale Sardo
An expression of decadent paradox, Turriga is a wine which can truly be described as both delicate and powerful. Its backbone is the Cannonau grape, which like the Alicante grape (not to be confused with Alicante Bouchet, which is a hybrid) is a form of Grenache. Cannonau possesses thicker skin (and more generous tannin) than standard Grenache and endows Turriga with its muscular spice and ethereal suggestion of tropical herbs. Carignan (here called Carignano) and Muristello (which may be a relative Mourvedre) occupy the wine’s remaining fifteen percent and add their earthy, inky signatures to the blend. Mission fig, white pepper, and cedar dominate with jasmine and coffee barely perceptible in the distance. I would heartily recommend this to wine lovers looking for an exceptional and charismatic twist. Priorat and Rhone devotees should especially like what they find here.
