Mount Palomar Chardonnay 2005
Region: Temecula Valley
Winery: Mount Palomar
This 2005 vintage Chardonnay greets us with a beautiful orange blossom and spiced apple aroma. It's flavors of apple and pear, spiced with light oak notes are refreshing and pure. From its aromatic fruity nose, to its fresh, gentle presence, this vintage has become a favorite of ours. After the "attack of the sharpshooters" several years back, we decided not to replant Chardonnay on our estate property, since it is so susceptible. We found one great new vineyard in the valley near Mount Palomar Winery and contracted to have another planted in the cool De Luz highlands at the western end of the Temecula Valley appellation. That vineyard, planted with a newer Dijon, France vine selection provides crisp acidity and aromatic fruitiness. The valley vineyard produces a more mellow wine with fuller body and riper flavors. The two work in a complementary fashion. As in the past, this wine is barrel fermented, but it has a more aromatic, fruitier and fresher quality than previous vintages.
It should match very well with fish fillets, especially rich fish like swordfish or tuna, broiled lobster and grilled prawns. It also matches well with poultry dishes and semi-soft cheeses.
