The 2002 Beatty Ranch Zinfandel is like its 2001 predecessor, boasting a wonderful nose of strawberry and cherry with hints of cocoa. This vintage is also more powerful and mouth-filling than the 2001, with a suppleness and finesse of a great ripe Burgundy. (Something you don’t hear in comparisons with Zin.) I love great Zinfandel right out of the barrel and this youthful wine is very seductive right now.
The wine is made from mountain-grown fruit so nature intensifies the grape’s flavors. The wine is made so the fruit flavors come through and the tannins are softer. This makes for a very approachable wine that requires little or no aging yet will age nicely for several years gaining even more complexity.
