The storied Robert Young Vineyards on the westward facing hillsides at the base of the Mayacamas Mountains just outside Healdsburg offer this dense, rich Old-World style Malbec. The vines are fully mature at an average age of 25 years, and they offer up fruit which produces a wine nearly black in color, a deep purple which suggests the tasting experience ahead. There are 14 different varietals planted in this 300-acre vineyard, though reds dominate the hillsides. The soils are diversified, but are dominated by alluvial fans that spread close against the vineyardÂ’s hills. Ancient times saw Mt. St. Helena erupt and lay volcanic tuffs and compressed ash among sandstone, shale and oceanic sediment and crusts. Well drained gravelly loams lay atop clay, so the vines struggle and gain intensity. This is a wine with a true sense of place. As you begin to explore the wine youÂ’ll find aromas of honeysuckle blossoms, blackberry jam and juicy blueberries. As you taste youÂ’ll experience the same blueberry and blackberry jam, with creamy vanilla from the extended oak aging and a boldness that says Alexander Valley. A touch of Cabernet Sauvignon adds a welcome layer of complexity.
