TASTING NOTES:“There is a ripeness and concentration to this wine that represents a new style for us,” says winemaker Robert Brittan. “Although elegantly structured, the wine has lots of extraction and a new level of density. But it still has the briary character that I think of as the hallmark of Stags’ Leap Merlot, layered with aromas of fresh and dried herbs and flavors of black cherry, raspberry jam, lemon grass and Belgian hot cocoa. It is truly a wine with a sense of place.” Because the vineyard has heavier and lighter soils, warmer and cooler sites, handpicking took place over a period of several weeks, with Brittan focused intently on bringing every single cluster into the winery at optimum ripeness. “I’ve found that with Merlot you really have to pick it ripe, probably even a little overripe, to get the classical Merlot characteristics in the finished wine,” comments Brittan. The individual blocks were fermented hot, sometimes reaching 90°F, in small lots, and aged in French oak barrels for eighteen months.REVIEWS:Rated 87 Dark, rich and concentrated, with flavors that veer into herb, mulch and blackberry. Mouthcoating tannins on the finish. (Jim Laube) Wine Spectator March 31, 2003 Retail Price: $50.00Your Price: $40.00SAVE: $10.00

Drank after being open on the third day in winter:
Color: Violet/garnet with a dark center

Nose: Black fruit with good cherry on top, forest floor and anise.

Palate: Full-bodied with silky tannins, this is a great Merlot. Good structure and acidity with integrated oak and some great dark fruit and savory elements.
