S.L.V. was first planted in 1970 and three years later produced the Cabernet Sauvignon that astounded the world by triumphing over leading French Bordeaux in the 1976 Judgment of Paris tasting. 2003 marks the 30th Anniversary of the first bottling of S.L.V., famous for besting the French in the 1976 Paris Tasting. Although still in the midst of replanting at the time of the 2003 harvest, we are beginning to see the rewards of our “horticultural” approach to vineyard management, where decisions are made on a vine by vine basis. A rich array of aromas introduces the 2003 S.L.V. Cocoa powder, clove, and black cherry unite with pretty floral tones and a touch of cedary smoke. Flavors of chocolate, raspberry, black cherry and truffle flourish in the mouth. Texturally, the wine’s signature pebbly tannins are present but integrated and fine grained. There is a long cherry cola and smokey finish.
