Wow...tasting this 1927 solera was like good sex...sweet and intense, with a nice long finish. Great after a good meal...haha, but really this dessert wine has such depth and quality that I have bought 2 cases already. A port drinker by nature, I found that the Pedro Ximenez Solera has less of an "alcohol heat" and more of a lingering warmth that followed the honeyed richness across the palate. Beautiful stuff. Can't wait to see what it does in a couple years!

Color: Looks just like motor oil
Nose: Quite good with toasted marshmallow, kiwi, a more unusual aroma of slight diesel, marzapan and sweet tobacco
Palate: Incredibly decadent texture, extremely sensual. Great caramelized sugar, toasted marshmallow, great acidity to balance the sweetness and some citrus in here as well, but more of a baked citrus. Outstanding!

Alvear Montilla-Moriles Pedro Ximenez Solera 1927
Region: Montilla-Moriles, Andalucía, Spaine
Winery: Alvear
Variety: Pedro Ximénez
Rating: 5
"The impressive 1927 Pedro Ximenez Solera, from a Solera begun nearly 80 years ago, boasts a dark amber color as well as an extraordinary nose of creme brulee, liquefied nuts, marmalade, and maple syrup. Huge and viscous, yet neither cloyingly sweet nor heavy, it is a profound effort priced unbelievably low. It is meant to be drunk alone at the end of a meal."
