I just read that someone call this wine "borderline port." While it's nowhere near the sweet or juiciness of a port, I would agree that the flavors and aromas are similar.

'haven't drunk Zin in a while, and a friend gave us cart blanche to his wine cooler (with a reserved veto power I presume). So we saw this gem and pulled it out.
My intuition was that a Zinfandel would pair well with the BBQ pork we were eating. It did pretty well, and I've just read now that Zin is a suggested pairing for things with "lots of BBQ sauce".
Anyway, it was a very interesting wine, with a lot of flavor. A little pricey, but check it out if you've got a budget.

Rosenblum Maggie's Valley Zinfandel 2003
Region: Maggie's Valley
Winery: Rosenblum Cellars
Variety: Zinfandel
This was an amazing wine. I've enjoyed most zinfandel wines that I have tired - but have never had one in this price range. Very noticeable difference from a $16 bottle of zinfandel.
The first sip packs a powerful punch of coffee and berry notes. I can tasted herb and earth flavors, too.
