Shiraz, also known interchangeably as Syrah, is considered Australia?s favorite red variety and is the most widely planted grape variety in Australia. Shiraz gained popularity in the mid to late 90s, and is produced in a range of styles. It is typically used on its own to create dry red table wines, but is frequently blended with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Grenache, Mourvedgre, and Viognier. Shiraz wines are typically best after ten to fifteen years of aging and possess a full body with a typical flavor. They contain floral and berry notes, typically characterized by blackberry, pepper, leather, and mokey tastes. The most popular regions for Shiraz include Rhone, Australia, California, Washington State, and South Africa.
