Jul. 7, 2008 Greppicante Greppi 2005

Personal Notes

(Zachys)"The generous, sweet warmth of Maremma comes through in spades in the 2005 Greppicante. A blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc, it offers perfumed ripe dark fruit and toasted oak notes with excellent concentration and weight on the palate...this is a wine that made me smile, and after tasting hundreds of wines from Tuscany that is no small feat. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2015. I Greppi is a new project in Bolgheri jointly owned by the Landini family of Fattoria Viticcio in Chianti and the CancellieriScaramuzzi family. Most of the vineyards have only been planted recently, but if these two new releases are indicative of what the estate is capable of we will have much to look forward to over the coming years...89." Personal Notes

CHIANTI PICCINI ARANCIO, which is defined by the great success of its unmistakable label, is a deep, ruby red with an intense and persistent fragrance of mature red fruit.

It's a well-structured, smooth wine, with soft tannins and distinct notes of red fruit.

Since 1882 Piccini has paid tribute to this great wine, bringing particular care and attention to its production. Renewal of vineyards, precise selection of Sangiovese clones and careful picking at harvest-time, have always favored "Quality" over "Quantity".

This has made Chianti PICCINI ARANCIO the "Chianti par excellence", and has led to great success at the international level.

A selection of 100% Sangiovese grapes, identified uniquely with the soil of Tuscany, is processed at a controlled temperature with a long maceration period.

To this are added the practices of the so-called "GOVERNO ALL'USO TOSCANO" (traditional Tuscan wine making techniques).

Thanks to these particular characteristics, Chianti Piccini Arancio may be paired with a wide variety of foods, from first course dishes and hearty soups to roasts and pizza….what's most important is to drink it in good company.

Piccini recommends a serving temperature of 18°C.

Jul. 5, 2008 Round Hill Vineyards & Cellars Char 2007

Personal Notes

Okay, the AVA on Rutherford Wine Company’s Round Hill 2007 Oak Free Chardonnay is California. That leaves the winery’s grape source wide open, right? The fruit, in fact, was taken from “select vineyards throughout California.” So you can understand my confusion with the winemaker’s notes that accompanied my review sample which describe the entire state of California as if it were one wine growing region and not the nearly 90 AVAs that exist in the state.

The notes talk about 2007’s stunning vintage with very cold days and no precipitation and a spring with unusually high temperatures and early bud break. A mild summer with few days topping 100 degrees and a Labor Day heat spike gave the grapes the sugar development growers were looking for. Alas, this generalization does not summarize what went on in every part of the state or the multiple AVAs from which the Chardonnay came.

But hey, the marketing hype, or maybe mis-hype, can’t get around what a bargain this delicious wine is. Listed at $12, Round Hill is invariably sold for much less in supermarkets and wine stores and that price belies the surprising quality of the Chardonnay in the bottle. Delightfully oak-free (the company’s first in this style), the full-bodied Chard is big on flavors, particularly green apples and pears with a backbone of lemon. Without the barrel-age to interfere, we get Chardonnay fruit that stands up on its own, with enough acid to balance the blend, making it enjoyable from first sniff to last sip. With alcohol at a refreshing 13.2 percent, this is a bargain wine that is made for the impatient, not for the cellar.

Jul. 5, 2008 Bigi Est! Est!! Est!!! di Montefiascone 2007

Personal Notes

(The Wine Buyer) Bigi Est Est Est Although best known for Orvieto, Bigi has always produced small quantities of "Est! Est!! Est!!!" from nearby Montefiascone. This historic wine has a remarkable story. Around 1100 A.D., Bishop Fugger was traveling from Germany to Rome for the coronation of Henry V. The Bishop sent his quartermaster ahead to scout out inns that had good food and wine. He would write "Est!" (Latin for "This is it!") on the walls of the best inns. He was so impressed with Montefiascone that he wrote Est!Est!!Est!!! on the wall of an inn there. Needless to say, the Bishop agreed and never made it to the coronation. He spent the rest of his life in Montefiascone. Local inhabitants, on the anniversary of the Bishop's death, pour a cask of Est! Est!! Est!!! on his grave in celebration of the notoriety he brought to their wine. Bigi produces a flinty, delicious white wine, which is as good as the story!!

Personal Notes

(The Wine Buyer) Bigi was founded by Luigi Bigi in 1880. Today it is the leading winery in Orvieto. Located just beneath the lofty walls of ancient Orvieto, Bigi is one of Italy's busiest cellars. The winery and cellars, redesigned and modernized by renowned oenologist Giacomo Tachis, draw thousands of visitors each year. Bigi is the leading brand of Orvieto with a thirty percent share of the total output of the zone. Equally important is the outstanding vineyard work done by Bigi. They own or manage almost 200 hectares (nearly 500 acres), notably Torricella, Orzalume, Viavalle and Il Poggio. Bigi thus controls the quality of its wines from vine to bottle under the direction of dynamic enologist Francesco Bardi, who is considered one of Umbria's most innovative winemakers.

89 Points, Wine Spectator - The 2003 Zaccagnini Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Tralcetto Riserva is a big and juicy wine consisting of very ripe and plummy fruit. It's full bodied and chewy, with lovely soft, round tannins. A seriously long finish helps it pair with hearty Italian meals. From the same vineyard that brought you the 94 point Wine Spectator Montepulciano in 1997, the highest ever scoring montepulciano to this day. - 07/05/2008
