Tasting Notes
& Comments

Winemaker Notes: From Veeder Hills vineyards with altitudes of 600 – 1120 feet, this wine is a powerful, brambly and structured mountain Cabernet Sauvignon that pairs well with robust dishes
and grilled meats. The aroma expresses cassis, molasses, milk chocolate, black berry, and black cherry followed by briary notes of sweet loganberry and oak-cedar. On the palate the wine is layered with the same fruit characters and dark chocolate with chewy tannins and a medium bodied mid-palate that build through the finish. Great age worthy potential. - 12/15/2007

These notes from the internet are right on:

The 2005 Ultra is exactly as we’ve come to expect: It’s saturated, dark, meaty and ripe, with huge blackberry flavors and lavish creamy oak. Very modern, but done in the right way." 91
points - Wine Enthusiast, October 1, 2007.

A wine which really jumps out when tasted, exhibiting many of the traits that are drawing wine lovers to the wines of Argentina and Chile. The style of this wine is New World: 14.5% alcohol, with the smell and taste of vanilla and oak.  - 12/08/2007

I see you have tried several Vincent Arroyo wines. I have had problems with these this year. I got my shipment and tried a 2005 melange, a 2005 petite syrah and 2 2005 JJs, and all had a very strong unpleasant mineral smell and taste (like band-aids, possibly brett yeast). Sent it back and got a new shipment, but it was the same. Did you experience anything similar? I have always loved his wine in years past.

Thanks for the email. I see that you are a fan of Zinfandel, I am too. My favorite is the Silverado and usually pick up a couple of cases through out the year. I have been a fan Vincent Arroyo for about 3 years. The first time I met Vincent he did the taste himself and showed me some great wine and port in the back. I was there last month and tried their new tastes. The were good except for the new Merlot which was terrible. Hate to say it but maybe a bad bottle or something. I did pick up my 2 cases. You might be able to drink now but I would hold 6mo to 2 years. I still have some from my first trip there. -Les (yodamon)
