Jul. 15, 2008	Ludovicus Red (wine #4) 2005 Ludovicus Red (wine #4) 2005 Region: Spain-Terra Alta (climate zone 5) > Winery: Celler Pinol Variety: 35% Garnacha, 30% Tempranillo, 25% Syrah, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon The 2005 Ludovicus, a blend of 35% Garnacha, 30% Tempranillo, 25% Syrah, and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon was aged for 3 months in French and American oak before being bottled unfined and unfiltered. Dark ruby-colored, it offers a complex bouquet (rare in a $10 wine) of cedar, spice box, pepper, black cherry and blackberry. Supple-textured, with medium-body, the wine has layers of sweet red fruit flavors, good depth, and excellent length. Dark ruby-colored, it offers a complex bouquet (rare in a $10 wine) of cedar, spice box, pepper, black cherry and blackberry. Jul. 15, 2008	Le Grand Noir Cabernet - Shiraz 2004 Le Grand Noir Cabernet - Shiraz 2004 Region: France-Vin de Pays d'Oc, Languedoc-Roussillon (Minervois) > Winery: Le Grand Noir Variety: Cabernet Sauvignon 60%, Shiraz 40% Producer's notes: The vineyards, selected from low yielding vines, come from the areas of Carcassonne and the Minervois. Minervois has a mild Mediterranean climate, rolling uplands among broad plateaus, and soil composed of limestone, clay, and schist, streaked with granite and chalk. Considered the best of the region. The grapes were picked at optimum ripeness then cold macerated prior to alcoholic fermentation in order to extract colour and flavour. The wine was macerated on skin for four weeks then pressed and malo-lactic fermentation was carried out in oak barrels. The wine was racked then aged for six months. Deep red colour with purple fringe. Intense aromas of vanilla, coffee, red fruit, spice and herbs. Rich palate with soft tannins, vanilla and red fruit flavours, with excellent length. Appearance: Dark colour, with ruby tints. Nose: Scents of red and black berries mixed with floral notes, together with hints of delicate wood and vanilla. Taste: On the palate, this wine is complex, rich, long and fat. It displays aromas of crushed black fruits (blackberries, blackcurrants, cherries) and jam. The tannins are plump and well-integrated. Unlike many Pinot Noirs grown in the Pays d'Oc, this wine is not dominated by heaviness or an excessive over-ripeness. Clarksburg has been making a reputation for Chenin for many years, and this wine confirms it, for it’s quite elegant and polished. The wine was barrel-fermented and aged nine months…tangy in citrus and wildflower flavors, and quite low in alcohol, just 13 percent. Intense aromas of black fruit (plums) and less ripe red fruit (cranberries, mulberries, redcurrants, blackcurrants).
