Via Lot18:
Distinctive, refined, balanced, pretty, engaging, exciting. Am I getting across how much I love this wine? This is not a fruit bomb but a savory and nuanced glass of awesomeness. Ripe blackberry fruit is coupled with crushed rose petal, bay leaf incense and pink peppercorn (an exact match!). It's medium-bodied, with sexy oak signatures. Pair this with fancy beef on the grill or simple cheeseburgers. The wine will shine through regardless of what you serve. 93 percent Cabernet, 7 percent Merlot. (14.5% ABV) - 01/26/2013

Characterized by sloped topography and gravelly/rocky residual soils, the unique growing conditions bring out the best in Pedroncelli's Merlot. Bouquet of black cherry, warm spice and rich plum. Blackberry, red currant, and tea notes highlight the flavor. The subtle toasty oak complements the rich fruitiness in the mouth. Lush and full bodied, with soft tannins and a lasting finish. - 05/26/2012

Fruit was hand-harvested, inoculated with cultured yeast, fermented in separate lots, then pressed together prior to barreling down. We employed 50% new Trust Hungarian oak, and 50% two to three year-old Demptos and Seguin Moreau thin stave Chateau-style barrels to age the wine 18 months. Prior to bottling, we added 13% Cabernet Franc to lift the aromatics and firm the structure of the wine. This dark Merlot has aromas of anise seed, ripe berry, olive and cigar box spices. On the palate, the wine is tightly structured with moderately firm, persistent tannins. Enjoy with grilled or lightly smoked foods, barbecued meats and braised root vegetables. - 03/16/2012

The 2004 entices right away with refined but rich layers of cinnamon, sun-drenched blackberries, cocoa powder and toasted vanilla. The palate is silky and textured with notes of fresh cranberry compote, baking spices and a hint of licorice. There is a core of what can only be described as that famed Rutherford dust running throughout this wine, which adds structure and depth to the rich fruit flavors. This wine can be enjoyed now but will cellar beautifully for the better part of the next six to eight years. - 11/07/2011

Layers of cherries, orange blossoms and dark plum fruit pervade the mid-palate, while earthy cocoa flavors and tobacco tones round out the long finish. Only 13.6% ABV---still retaining its fruit with quite a bit of age-worthiness to go. - 08/14/2011

Wine Advocate Review
Rated 89
The 2008 Vitiano Rosso (Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese) is a racy, sleek wine that impresses with its layers of perfumed red cherries and sweet toasted oak. The wine offers terrific clarity and precision in a slightly taut, focused style for this offering. A few months of bottle age seems prudent. According to proprietor Riccardo Cotarella, the bottle variation that occasionally shows up in Vitiano is most likely attributable to the different amounts of time the various lots spend in bottle prior to arriving on the market. Clearly lots that have more time in bottle have the potential to show greater harmony than lots that have less time in bottle. That said, slight bottle variation issues here are a minor quibble for a wine that delivers so much value. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2012.

Wine Tasting Notes
This is a blockbuster young red wine with explosive, luscious aromas. Vitiano Rosso is deep ruby red in color, and offers a wide range of fruit and spice aromas, including black cherry jam, licorice and tobacco leaf. This versatile wine pairs well with a wide array of food, including meat, pasta and pizza. It is best enjoyed in its youth when its fresh fruit character is most evident. Vitiano Rosso is a perennial value. - 08/10/2011

winemaker's notes:
Our Merlot bounds from the glass with a potpourri of ripe black cherry, plum compote, smoked meat, dried tomato, black olive, black tea and sweet vanilla aromas that preface a lush, round, lengthy palate of concentrated dark cherry, plum, cassis and pie spice flavors. Rich and complex, this is a Merlot to ponder and savor.

Delicious with duck, barbecued chicken, cherry-glazed pork tenderloin, beef and lamb dishes, tomato-based pastas and black olive and mushroom pizza.

critical acclaim:
"Easily one of the best Napa Valley Merlots out there. The cool vintage and southerly valley origins have played a role in giving a firm, dry structure to the cherry, currant, olive, mushu plum sauce and herb flavors. A quality wine, distinctive and complex, and for the price, a relative value."

Fairhills is the world’s most well-known fair trade brand being sourced from three fair trade wine countries of origin, Argentina, Chile, and South Africa. The Fairhills initiative benefits over 1300 beneficiaries in the three different countries and focuses on improving the living and social conditions of these producers.
Fairhills Merlot benefits the local farmers of Du Toitskloof in the Breede River Valley Region and Du Toitskloof Winery of South Africa. The Fair Trade initiative is dedicated to twenty-two farms and fourteen members to improve the quality of life for over 1,000 community members, including 210 children. The initiative has opened three daycare facilities, built a sports club and a community center with a library, as well as provided adult training and education, and plans on buying their own land that the community will manage.
The Fairhills initiative has created a very successful and financially sustainable brand that benefits the environment and the communities in the underdeveloped regions of South Africa, Argentina and Chile. “To my knowledge, the Fairhills project is one of the largest and most successful Fairtrade projects in the world. In my experience it certainly ranks as one of the largest and highest impact Fairtrade projects in Africa and Argentina and definitely the largest in wine. The project is a model example of what Fairtrade can achieve,” according to Flo-Cert.
Fairhills Merlot pairs well with steak, lamb, pasta or simply on its own.

With delightful plum, sweet cherry tomato, dark cherry, and olallieberry fruit our Merlot delights from the start. As the fruit gives way to notes of anise, roast fennel seed, and smokiness, it’s tempting to just sink into the glass. Crisp and mouthwatering, silky tannins back up a full, strong mouth with great structure and lead into a savory sage finish. This wine is sure to spoil you.

Awesome with duck, try it with your favorite tomato-based pasta dish, too. And for the true hedonists, drizzle a little over some fresh berries and ice cream. You can thank us later. - 02/01/2011

winemaker's notes:
With Merlot, the objective is to create a wine that has structure and complexity, but soft, smooth tannins. We find that sourcing fruit from several different appellations works best to give us a Merlot that exudes multiple layers of flavor and a nice seductive texture. We also blend in small amounts of Petite Sirah, Syrah, and Petit Verdot to achieve a richer color. Grapes that come from Napa provide weight, sweet fruit flavors and the intense aromatics of fresh berries, while the Sonoma fruit contributes natural acidity to create more balance and finesse. Monterey County grapes provide concentration; a result of the well-drained sandy loam soils that characterize the region.

2008 was a challenging vintage that delivered a very small crop as a result of spring frost that devastated many of the vines. In fact, some vineyards lost 50% of their fruit. The upside to having fewer grape clusters is the aromatics become more profound and flavors more concentrated and complex. Rich, fruity and elegantly textured this wine delivers soft, velvety tannins, and a touch of oak from barrel aging. Diamond Collection Merlot pairs beautifully with herb-crusted lamb chops, marinated flat iron steak, and creamy bleu cheeses.

Our Merlot combines fruit from Napa, Sonoma and Monterey. The flavors and textures unique to each region harmonize perfectly to create a wine that has dark succulent fruit balanced by natural acidity. Intense aromatics of raspberry and blueberry lead to flavors of crushed berries, vanilla and leather, which are wrapped up in a soft, smooth tannin structure. - 11/26/2010

Dark purple in color with a nose of blackberry jam melded with creamy vanilla aromas, a touch of tobacco, spicy clove and cinnamon. The wine is rich in the mouth, with smooth tannins and rich, ripe plum and berry flavors. The finish is long and fruit-filled, with the perfect amount of toasty oak spice. This wine is perfect for enjoying upon release and for the next 4-5 years. - 09/06/2010

great nose but less than great taste in my opinion

WS 90pts. - #61 on Wine Spectator's Top 100 Wines of 2009 - According to James Suckling on his WineSpectator.com blog: I came across an incredible value in my office in Tuscany today. Tasting a range of wines from $10 to $25 with Neil and Maria Empson of Empson & Co., I found some excellent wines. But what was the most impressive for the money was the Monte Antico 2006. Its suggested retail is $11, and it could sell for less (like here). And it is in the market now. Granted, I have not tasted it blind yet. But it’s in the very good to outstanding range. The wine is 75 percent Sangiovese, 15 percent Merlot and 10 percent Cabernet Sauvignon. It is made from 25-year-old vines minimum, mostly from Pisa, Maremma and Chianti Classico areas. Of course, the quality of the 2006 vintage in Tuscany shined through on this wine. This is a superb Sangiovese year. The aromatic quality of Sangiovese is mind-blowing for most wines from Tuscany. The 2006 Monte Antico has beautiful plums, berries and fresh acidity. Fantastico! And for $11!

Aromas and flavors of spiced black cherry, dark plum, blueberry and a beautifully integrated layer of tea leaf. The juicy, dense palate is framed by broad, finely textured tannins. The elegant structure and bright acidity carry the flavors through a long, lingering finish. Delicious upon release, this Merlot will benefit from five years of cellaring and continue to age gracefully for 10 to 12 years. - 12/19/2009
