Conte di Bregonzo Amarone della Valpolicella

Posted by zinbythesea on Feb 7th, 2010

IT'S QUITE COOL AND BREEZY but the rain clouds have cleared.  I hear wind chimes tinkling in the wind and little boat traffic in the harbor.

This evening was calling for something special...it has been a long and exhausting work week (with plenty more of those to come) and I've been craving something that I can sink my teeth into.  A "quick" trip to Trader Joe's turned into approximately 30 minutes of doing figure 8s around the wine aisles looking for that something special.  (My first choice was not to be found at this location.)  I slowed my paces down... Wine For Haiti: Brother Can You Spare a Bottle?

Posted by drxeno on Jan 24th, 2010

[CAPTION ID="" ALIGN="ALIGNRIGHT" WIDTH="300" CAPTION="DAMON Winter/The New York Times"][/caption]

By now, all of us around the world are very aware of the devastation that continues to unfold in the nation of Haiti from the earthquake of January 12, 2010.  The resulting aftermath and aftershocks have continued to pummel the small island nation and it requires every increasing levels of aid and resources.  It is with these very concerns that have prompted the creation of an unprecedented, global online charity wine auction to directly support the recovery efforts in Haiti.

One of the online magazines for which I write, Palate Press... [continue reading]

Pre-WBC09: Twisted Murphys Wine'n!

Posted by drxeno on Dec 31st, 2009

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU GET bunches of wine bloggers all together to take over a small wine country town? Mine cave-ins, death, destruction and mass group arrests!  OK...that didn't quite happen, but mass chaos, super amounts of fun and the realization that Calaveras County is an up-and-coming wine region with Murphys leading the charge as a boutique wine destination definitely DID occur.  The Twisted Oak Winery Pre-WBC09 Murphys/CalaCo wine event had dropped, and there was no going back!

Jeff Stai (Twitter, Twitter2) vintner of Twisted Oak and the mad blogger behind the wine biz-leading industry blog, El Bloggo Torcido teamed... [continue reading]

Palate Press Article: 2009 NorCal Harvest Report

Posted by drxeno on Dec 23rd, 2009

THIS PAST WEEK SAW ANOTHER article of mine published at Palate Press: The Online Wine Magazine.  I first mentioned Palate Press when it had its very successful launch earlier this year, as well as when my first article debuted, a comparison of crystal stemware.  My second article is now posted, a wide-ranging review of the 2009 harvest across many of the appellations in Northern California.

Many of the talented writers and editors at Palate Press have been hard at work building a comprehensive portfolio of this year's harvest reports covering many of the appellations in the northern hemisphere.  These articles... [continue reading]

JJ Buckley's Tuesday Night Bordeaux at La Folie

Posted by drxeno on Dec 19th, 2009

I ATTENDED A MOST ENLIGHTENING Bordeaux tasting a couple weeks back, courtesy of JJ Buckley Fine Wines, an outstanding online purveyor of wine based out of the SF Bay Area.  The event was held at the well known French restaurant La Folie, which also provided the nibbles that were served alongside the wines that night.  Tuesday Night Bordeaux aimed to prove to its lucky attendees that good to outstanding quality wine can be had in Bordeaux at affordable prices.  All of the wines were $35 and under, with most falling into the $25 and under range.

This event aligned perfectly... [continue reading]

New Sponsor: Cahors (French Malbec)

Posted by jason on Dec 10th, 2009

FOR THE NEXT FEW MONTHS, we will be featuring some Cahors wine in the recommendations page and also running ads spotlighting this great wine region.

I almost said "upcoming" wine region, which is ridiculous because like most region of France, Cahors has been making wine forever (Wikipedia says Since 50 BC). However, the region is in the spotlight again thanks to the success of Malbec wines in South America. Since 1956 (thanks Wikipedia again), Cahors has been "dominated" by the Malbec grape. And so Cahors wine is also referred to as "French Malbec".

I haven't had any wine from Cahors... [continue reading]

15th Anniversary of the Rediscovery of Carmenere

Posted by drxeno on Nov 24th, 2009

WHAT DOES A DOWN-ON-ITS LUCK, premium French blending grape varietal do after it's been kicked out of its ancestral home for having the sniffles?  It merely travels around the world and reinvents itself as the defining varietal of the newest and hippest wine growing nation, of course!  Carmenère, say goodbye to Bordeaux and hello to Casablanca!

The transition didn't happen exactly that way, but then what's the fun in that?  Carmenère really was one of the original six blending varietals of Bordeaux, all the way back in the 1800's.  But then, riding on the roots of some cuttings from America,... [continue reading]

Epcot International Food and Wine Festival

Posted by jason on Nov 11th, 2009

LAST MONTH KIM AND I visited Orlando for vacation with our 10-month old son and Kim's parents. We're big fans of Epcot and the great food, drinks, and live acts they have in the "countries" lining the back end of the park. As a bonus, Epcot was having their annual Food and Wine festival. We thought we would partake and report back here on what the festival has to offer.

The Wine and Food Festival at Epcot in DisneyWorld Orlando is came to a close in October. This review will hopefully be useful to those planning a trip during future... [continue reading]

Posted by waage1 on Nov 7th, 2009

THE FEAST OF ALL HALLOW’S Eve at the Chateau Ste. Michelle Manor House

October 31 the Chateau Ste. Michelle property was transformed with tricks and treats all around. The manor was  in season with carved pumpkins, red glowing lights and strobe lights along the grounds.

We started the evening out in the main building where we were served, as creatively described by the Chateau:

Severed Potato Fingers Smudged with Goosed Confit & Frizzled Shallots
Lobster Quesadillas Coffined Beneath Smoky Tomato Salsa & Fiery Aioli
Pizza Transmogrified with Wild Mushrooms Plucked Under the Full Moon,
Lycanthropic Truffle Cheese, Wolfsbane-Infused Truffle Oil... [continue reading]
