So I’ve been waiting for an occasion to bust out some more box wine. I had a good experience with Hardy’s Box Wine in the past, but have been wanting to try something from the King of Box Wines: Franzia.
The Super Bowl is a perfect occasion for box wine. 5L is a lot of wine. It’s like 30+ servings, so you need a big crowd to get rid of the stuff quickly enough. I guess it’s cheap enough (at about $12 for 5L) to throw some out, but I’m one of those guys who eats everything on his plate and tries his best to waste nothing.
Also, expectations are not high for the Super Bowl… as they might be for a wedding or some other occasion where we would provide the wine.
We ended up getting Franzia’s “Chillable” Red Wine. It may have been a mistake. I can’t even find out what grapes are in it. It may not even be “wine”! It’s called “table wine with natural flavors”, and who knows what they mean by flavors.
Still, the guy at the Wine & Spirits store said it’s a popular item. So there are people out there interested in reviews. However, I think it would be good to give Franzia a fair shake by trying one of their “real wines”. I’m thinking maybe the Burgundy or Cabernet Sauvignon.

Ah man did this wine suck. It wasn’t really wine and didn’t taste like wine either.
I think it would be okay if you were expecting a fruity beverage with some alcohol in it, but it doesn’t compare to… anything.
Get the Hardy’s box wine instead. Some of the other might be good too. I still want to give one of Franzia’s pure grape wines a try, but it will take a while to work up the resolve.

Bummer about the Franzia, I don’t like it at all, either. There is actually a lot of good box wine out there these days, tho. It’s becoming a good way to get premium wine that will last for quite some time, at a discounted price compared to the bottle. Hmmm…blog idea?
An alternative packaged wine that I really like is French Rabbit Pinot Noir and the Cab blend. It comes in a tetra-pak. It’s ecologically friendly and not a bad tasting wine. And it’s imported from France. I was very suprised that I liked this wine. The first time I had it was at the top of a mountain while skiing. I couldn’t believe a friend said she brought a bottle skiing. When she pulled out the French Rabbit I was skeptical when I saw the packaging. But it makes sense and is a good travel wine. Besides being inexpensive it’s a full liter. Just reminds me not to judge a book by it’s cover. I now sell it at my bar for $5 at happy hour and $8 after happy hour. I go through almost four cases a month.
$8 a liter is a nice price… at the bar yet. What does the wine cost at the store or wholesale?
I like the concept of box wine, and appreciate that producers are making containers less than 3L. 1L sounds about perfect to me for an everyday wine that is going to last about a week on the counter or in the fridge.
