MyWinesDirect has given us a coupon to try out their site and few of their wines. To figure out what wines to buy, I first added all of the current wines available at MyWinesDirect to the WineLog database. (The MWD people gave me a data feed for this. Thanks, guys.) I then ran some reports comparing those wines to wines I’ve rated highly in my log and the wines which WineLog is already recommending to me.
These reports aren’t open to the public yet, but definitely something to think about. A killer app for data like the kind WineLog collects is to be able to ask it “which wines would I like at MyWinesDirect.com” or “which wines would I like at this store I’m in”. We’ll get there.
So anyway, here are the wines I chose and why.
Charles Thomas Pouilly-Fuisse 2004
This one wasn’t recommended actually, but I have been wanting to try some more Pouilly-Fuisse.
Richland Shiraz 2006
My reports were recommending some wine from Australia, specifically Shiraz. The recommendations suggested 2005, then 2004. MWD only had this 2006 available.
Pebejae Syrah 2005
Unsurprisingly, France was another region recommended by the reports I ran. The reports suggested Pinot Noir, but I thought this Syrah might do well.
Chilcas Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah 2004
Pinot Noir was actually the #1 recommended varietal for me. But I’ve been drinking a lot of that lately, so I thought I’d pick up some of my #2 recommended variety: Cabernet Sauvignon. Chilcas is a Chilean winery, which wasn’t recommended. But I want to try more Chilean stuff, so here we go.
River View Chardonnay 2005
In the white department the reports were definately recommending California Chardonnay, and there were quite a few available through MWD. This River View Chardonnay got good reviews on the MWD site, so I decided to go with that.
Sin Zin Zinfandel 2004
This is one Kim picked out. You should always pick up at least one bottle for your wife when you go shopping. This will also tell us which is better at picking wines for me: WineLog, my own tastes, or Kim. I’m giving it even odds all the way around.
I’ll be posting a few follow ups to this. One will be a review of the MWD site and process, which a bit of discussion on how this “no-ship-to” resident is getting wine shipped to him (hint: it’s good to have friends in neighbor states). And of course, once I get through all these wines, I’ll post reviews.
