One of my best friends (and bridesmaid in my wedding) sent me an email today asking for tips on the NYC wine scene. She is hoping to plan a romantic and cool date for her boyfriend’s birthday on April 9th.
She and her fella are getting into wine, which is why she is hoping to involve their new-found interest in his birthday celebrations. Here’s her request:
“I am thinking of either taking him to a wine/cheese tasting event/class or some kind of wine-related cooking class. What I really want is something interactive where we would learn about wine, and also taste it, of course! I thought you might know of a location that would have something like this.”
Any suggestions?

NOTE: I just talked to my friend and she’ll gladly write a review and comment on whatever they end up doing. Just in case you’re a wine school owner or something and would like to get on our blog
Hey Kim,
Last year I took the Windows on the World Wine School class in the Marriot in Time Square. It’s a bunch of classes (I believe 8 weeks) and Kevin Zraly is an amazing teacher. He’s a big teddy bear who is so passionate he instills the energy in his 30-40 people class.
He divides wines into regions and you go thru both the technical side and the way to taste.
The course is priced slightly high but the education on both the new and old is great. Your friend will not be sorry. I believe he also does a one day course so check it out. Here is the great kicker, from the rumors I hear he is the basis of the character from Sideways.
Let me attach the url:

If they can leave the city, they should tour a vineyard. LI has some pretty ones out on the tip. Spring is arriving, the vineyards usually have scheduled tours, then they can go to the tasting room afterwards. My husband and I love to do that. If she thinks the relationship is going somewhere, she can buy a commemorative bottle on the date.
Hello Kim,
I would seek out Lenn of Lenndevours Blog for advice. He keeps up to date with the LI wine scene and can probably assist your friends in making the best possible decision - provided LI is there destination in NY.
