Excuse me as this post will be fairly local in its nature, but I had to write it. I live in Fairfax, VA near the campus of Final Four Cinderella, George Mason. My wife has been ill this week, so I have been making store runs almost every day for various sickly needs. I encountered two pleasant surprises.

1) Safeway had a 6-bottle cardboard carrier. Plus, if you bought 6 bottles, you got a 10% discount. Event better than the Wegman’s 12 bottle requirement.

2) Target got a wine license. They only had one small aisle of wine, but had some decent common selections. I didn’t look too hard as I was in a hurry, but the prices seemed ok. They did have a decent amount of VA wines, which I was happy to see. I am a big supporter of all things “local.”

Will this deter my monthly Total Wine trip? Doubtful. However, I may end up grabbing that extra bottle at Target when I am picking up my other goodies.

Hello Matt,

Target has wines? I will have to check the new one here in Alexandria. For the longest they have sold wine racks, cheese, crackers, even relaxing evening CD’s to sip your wine to, but never wine. I will have to check that out.

On a side note, I have a few local winery names for you who are producing some decent estate bottled reds; some of the guys are really improving here, but I would agree with you that others have a little ways to go.

BTW, I also enjoy visiting Total Wine. Friendly and knowledgeable staff, great selection and deals, and tastings on Saturdays!

Happy Sipping!

I think you may find at least some of the wine bottles at Target to be significantly rectangular. At least it’s convenient (kind of like the old joke about the elephant six pack, but I digress.) I had occasion to taste the Pinot Grigio - certainly servicable. Watch therein the future for wine in TetraPaks (seriously!)
