Hello all. My name is Matt Baehr and I am coming at you from Fairfax, VA just outside DC. I have loosely kept a blog of wines under $10. As a wine novice, but lover who doesn’t have a great deal to spend, I try to keep my purchases cheap.

My favorites tend to be Tuscan reds. If I have extra money, a Brunello would be my choice. Although Pinot Noir and Shiraz are also varities I like. My wife is more into whites, so don’t worry, I won’t leave those out.

I have been out of town for a few days for work and just got home tonight. I hit the store to fill the fridge and decided I needed to get wine too. I opted for a sale item at the Giant, the local grocery.

Rex Goliath Pinot Noir - France California

This bottle was on sale for like $9, normally $12. Great label. The story behind the wine label is pretty fun. There was an old Texas circus that had a huge 47 pound rooster as the attraction. The label is an ode to the old ad posters that the circus used to post.

Anyway, the wine is a nice black cherry color. Not an overly fruity aroma. Fairly soft tannins, minorly fruity, but surprisingly dry for a Pinot. This Pinot is sharper than most, but I enjoy it. I will post a few I like better, but if you want a light wine that is somewhat dry and not too fruity, than go for it. The label at a minimum will get people talking.

Matt, aka CardCat, focuses his efforts on reviewing wines that are under $10. His 10 Dollar Wine blog chronicles his attempts at finding those hidden value wines. View Matt's Wine Log.

Hey, Matt. I’ve definitely noticed this wine in the shop. The label is a hoot.

The wine is made in California though. I went ahead and updated your post.

True, the wine is made in California, but the grapes are French. Not sure where I would say this one is “from”.

Ahh… an interesting, and subtle, dilema here.

Also, do you know if the wine is non-vintage. We have a 2001 and a NV in our database. I’d like to merge them if possible.

Also also, I needed a wine to drink during the Superbowl Sunday. Since the QB for the Bears name is Rex, something from Rex Goliath might be as close as I can get to that Ass-kicking Colts wine they have there in Indianapolis.

Welcome to WineLog neighbor! I live in Alexandria so right next to your locale. Outside of Virginia wine Vine Spot is always seeking a nice bargain so will be sure to follow up on your postings and wine log.

Ever visit any local wineries?

Hi Matt -it’s great to have you on board. Can’t wait for some great (inexpensive) wine recommendations.

Thanks for the various welcomes. I will do my best to provide for everyone.

I have visited 2 wineries near Leesburg, VA. Windham (Doukenie now I think) and Loudoun Valley. Doukenie has a great staff and a fun atmosphere. Both have a few decent whites. I have found Virgina reds to be not as good.

BTW, I forgot to mention. We need to come up with a tag for your under $10 selections. under10? <10? under$10?

Kim and I are a fan of just “under10″. But then that’s not saying anything about them being good. But then I think you’ll run into wines that are good and wines that are not so good, and we should use the under10 tag on all of them. Users can sort by rating to see which are good. Okay… done blabbering.

I have more history on that label for you. I used to eat lunch under that EXACT painting at a great little place here in Murphys, CA called the Pick and Shovel. It’s a big beautiful thing about 8′x6′. I used to think what a great label that would make when I got my winery going. Unfortunately, someone else ate lunch there too and seized the idea and ran with it first. The owners Dan & Katie sold the Pick a couple years ago, and they sold the painting separately to the winery. Where the Pick used to be is now a vegan restaurant called Mineral (which to a carnivore like me is surprisingly tasty.)

Now you know the rest of the story
