This New Year’s Eve, Jason and I consumed a variety of spirits, the most notable of which is the Goats do Roam Red 2005.
As I reached for the Rabbit Wine Preserver I received for Christmas, I realized that this bottle was a screw cap. Although I was a bit upset at not being able to try out my gift, I made sure to reset my attitude toward this wine for my first pour and sip.
The wine’s vibrant red color is highly reflective, like a piece of red stained glass. After letting the wine breathe in my glass for a bit of time, I took my first sip and was immediately pleased by it’s complexity. The wine is a blend of various Rhone varietals, but not one of them dominates the blend. It’s a medium-bodied wine, with top flavors of red fruits (black cherry and currant) balanced by light spice.
Upon further research, I’ve found that the grapes for this wine were sourced from a variety of regions in South Africa’s Western Cape, including the Paarl, Perdeberg, Piekenierskloof and Malmesbury. It is also the first vintage to incorporate fruit from Stellenbosch.
I’ve rated this wine 4 stars. It’s a great wine on multiple accounts: taste, color, price, uniqueness, and versatility.
On a side note…
I am slowly coming to the conclusion that, overtime, wine drinkers being to prefer wine above all other alcoholic beverages. The four lemon-drop martinis I had throughout the night were far less enjoyable than the two glasses of Goats do Roam Red I began my evening with. Does anyone else agree?

I might have agreed, but recently I tried a couple of the Hanger One infused vodkas - the Citron “Buddha’s Hand” and the Kaffir Lime. These vodkas are mind-blowingly delicious! Simply chill and pour into cocktail glasses.
No, I’m not throwing off wine for good, but there’s all sorts of good hooch out there…
Don’t forget Wawa diet green tea.
p.s. I like the side bar you made for this post. Maybe we should make a way for people to create one of these for any wine. Of course, we’d first have to get the label images in there and add fields for alcohol %, residual sugar, acidity, and PH.
I have to agree with Jason on this one I like the side bar approach quite nice.
Also, in respect to your comment on wine against other drinks. We have the same issue here in the UK but this revolves more around beer. A traditional beer here in the UK such as Tetley Bitter is being squeezed out by drinks like Stella Artois, what we describe as continental beer.
In terms of wine, we have a problem, if you go to a bar her, even wine bars the quality of wine is terrible, and generally over priced, it’s much better to drink at home or with friend at their houses. It’s what we call in fashion terms; “Staying in is the new going out” I have still not found a restaurant that really cuts the mustard for me.
However, if you are in the United States I’ve never found it a problem. Two of my favourite places to go out to eat are in the Tampa Bay Area. The first is Berns Steakhouse (http://www.bernssteakhouse.com/), which by the way is having a winefest April28th thru May 1st. Tickets go on sale Feb 1st. The other restaurant I really like is Saltrock Grill (http://www.saltrockgrill.com). The only sad thing is I only get there once a year, when visiting in laws. So if your east coast based with connections through the cheap airline network then you could do no worst than check out the Tampa Bay Area.
Ammendment to above comment - I was looking at last years details!! You will have to look out for this years details shortly for the winefest…..Sorry!
I’ll have to look into Berns Steakhouse and their winefest. Kim and I will be shopping for a place to settle down later this year, and I hear the Tampa Bay Area has some good real estate deals. Could kill 2 birds with one stone on this one.

Hm… I enjoy a wide variety of alcoholic beverages and would have to disagree. Strongly. I definitely think that a good beer is better than any wine.
Just tried Goats do Roam - I liked it fairly well. Some breathing really balanced this wine out.
I’m not sure I agree about the wine vs. spirits thing - both have their place. Nothing like a nice Bombay Sapphire martini…
