Best Year for [Insert Wine Variety Here]

While on the way back from Maine, we stopped at the big state store in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. They had a lot of good deals, but we didn’t end up buying any wine. Though we are thinking we might order wine for our wedding from there (or the great tax free stores in Delaware).

Anyway, while at the store I started thinking more about vintages. I realized that I don’t really know what a good year for Chardonnay is. I know I really like the 2000 Knights Value Cab Sav, but was 2005 as good a year for California Cab Savs in general? Was 2000 a good year for that matter?

I needed to educate myself. The first step was finding some vintage charts. A simple search on Google brought up this handy chart from eRobertParker.com. Turns out 2000 was a really good year for Cabernet Sauvignon in California (96 rating). 2005 was not such a great year for the same grape (88 rating).

This information is really useful. I mean maybe I think Knights Valley is okay, but maybe it’s the 2000 Cab Sav grape that really gets me. Parker also appends letters to the ratings, indicating with a “T” that 2000 Cab Savs were “Still tanic, youthful, or slow to mature”. Maybe that is what I like about this wine!

The obvious next step for me was how can I get this information to WineLog users (other than posting a link on the blog)? Maybe I put Parker’s chart ratings into the database and display it in the results for any search of the form “ “. So, right above the results for “2000 Cabernet Sauvignon” would be Parker’s “96T” rating. I think I’m going to write him to see if we can do that. If anyone else know another great source for vintage ratings, perhaps something with a less prolific personality behind them, let me know. I’d love to endorse a smaller site with the link.

The next (even more obvious) step for me was how can I use the WineLog data to generate the same kind of rating. We don’t have enough data to make definitive judgement calls on what the best years are for each variety. However, the data we have is useful.

I’ll end with some excerpts from our database, which we’ll try to find a decent way of presenting on the main site, and ask that if you have any other ideas for reports we could generate from our database let us know.
